After graduating from high school Terry served in the military before enrolling at Lock Haven University. Terry Szucs was one of the great offensive guards of his time at LHU. During his senior year he served as team captain on several occasions as part of a weekly rotating system of captains, based on strong play and merit. That same year he earned his way onto the PSAC all-star team as a first team guard in the western division of the conference. John Arty, a teammate of Terry’s, describes Terry as “an extremely talented player with strong leadership qualities who displayed outstanding dedication to Lock Haven Football.” Terry also showed leadership in other areas by serving as President of the Lock Haven Varsity Club and as a member of the Lock Haven Veterans Club.

After graduating in 1976, Terry spent a year as a graduate assistant coach at Lock Haven University. In 1977, Terry moved on to South Dakota State where he coached as a graduate assistant and received his Master’s Degree in Health, Physical Education and Counseling. From there Terry became a full-time assistant coach at Westmar University (Iowa) for 2 years, Wayne State College (Nebraska) for 4 years, Washburn University (Kansas) for 2 years, Dodge City Community College (Kansas) where he served as the Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach for a period of 13 years. Terry then returned to Lock Haven University, where he was an outstanding assistant coach for 18 years under head coaches Nick Polk, Mark Luther, John Klacik and John Allen. After this Terry spent a year coaching at Pittsburg State (Kansas) and 2 years in the Big 10 Conference at the University of Minnesota, serving with Head Coaches Jerry Kill and Tracey Claeys.

Lock Haven University is extremely fortunate to again claim Terry Szucs of one of its’ own, as he has returned this season to complete his forty-second year as a collegiate football coach at his alma mater! Terry reflects on his career as a football coach and as a fine mentor for thousands of players with the following statement, “No matter where you go, football is football, kids are kids and I have loved this sport for a long time.”

Terry and his wife have a fine legacy at Lock Haven University, as both of their daughters are LHU graduates. Vanessa is a Social Worker in the State College area and Beth is currently completing her Doctorate at Texas A&M.
