Jim Doran transferred to LHU from an outstanding Wesley Junior College program in Dover, Delaware. As his teammate, Terry Szucs states, “Jim was an excellent defensive lineman and when he aligned across from me in 1975 it was always a challenge to block his quickness and aggressiveness. I found out quickly why his nickname was the “Tasmanian Devil.” Jim made an immediate impact on the LHU defense which was evident by his being selected as a PSAC 2nd team defensive lineman in his first season at LHU. Jim was a team player and quickly earned the respect of his new teammates which resulted in his selection as a team captain for the 1976 season. Jim had another outstanding season in 1976 which was followed up with PSAC 2nd team defensive lineman honors again. Jim established himself in LHU’s record books while only playing two seasons is a testament to his athletic abilities and his commitment to his teammates and Lock Haven University.
Longtime Assistant and Head Coach Jack Fisher stated that “Jim Doran was the best Nose Guard that played for LHU in his tenure.” Coach Fisher also had the opportunity to coach Jim at Wesley Junior College for the 1973 and 1974 seasons where he was again an outstanding performer for the Wolverines. Jim was an All-Conference performer each season at Wesley and had several Division 1 offers out of Wesley but decided to follow Coach Fisher and several of his teammates to LHU in 1975. Jim was also inducted into the Wesley Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions and leadership at Wesley.
Jim earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from LHU in Journalism and Communications in 1977. He was also a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and a writer for The Eagle Eye, which is the LHU campus newspaper.
