Frank Geiger, a 1974 graduate of Lock Haven University, is a name that resonates with the spirit of athleticism, leadership, and academic excellence. A resident of Palmyra, Pennsylvania, Frank’s journey in sports began long before his time at Lock Haven.
At Lancaster Chaotic High School, Frank earned eight varsity letters across three sports: football, wrestling, and track. He was a two-year football co-captain, playing both ways, and had an impressive high school wrestling record of 115-5-1. He was the 165lb State Champion Catholic Class B as a senior and a second-place finisher as a junior.
At Lock Haven, Frank played as a Fullback, Wingback, and Middle Linebacker. He started at Fullback/Wingback in 1972, Fullback/Wingback/Middle Linebacker in 1973, and Middle Linebacker in 1974. His leadership qualities were evident as he served as a co-captain all three years. In 1973, he was recognized as the PSAC West 2nd Team Linebacker.
Frank’s academic achievements were equally commendable. He received an Academic/Athletic Scholarship in his sophomore year, which allowed him to continue competing in football and wrestling. This was a time when scholarships were not commonly a part of the program.
His leadership extended beyond the field. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity and the Men’s Varsity Club. After graduating from LHSC, Frank played Semi-Pro football in the Mid-Atlantic Conference for four years.
Frank’s contribution to sports did not end with his graduation. He coached wrestling at Harrisburg High School for two years. The team had not won in three years, but two years into his program, he had recruited 60 athletes, and they went from zero wins to winning half of their meets.
Frank’s teammate, Ray Pursell, who nominated him, describes Frank as a “John Wayne” type of athlete – a talk softly but carry a big stick kind of athlete. When coaches needed somebody tough as nails, they could depend on to do important things, Frank was often that guy. He was moved from fullback to wingback to linebacker as needed and excelled in all three positions, often leading the team in rushing, or receiving or tackles.
Frank Geiger’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and leadership. His contributions to Lock Haven University and the broader sports community make him a deserving candidate for the Lock Haven University Gridiron Greats/Hall of Fame Program.
