We are honored to welcome Mark E. Schmidt into the Lock Haven University Gridiron Greats. His illustrious career, spanning over four decades, is marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence and a passion for the game that has left an indelible mark on the institutions he served.

From 1990-1994, Mark Schmidt served as the Offensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Lock Haven University. His innovative approach to the game was evident in his development and implementation of the Run and Shoot offense. He coordinated both the running game and pass protections, demonstrating his strategic expertise and understanding of the game’s intricacies.

Schmidt’s responsibilities extended beyond the field. He handled meetings, film breakdown, and weekly blocking schemes of opponents. On game day, he signaled in plays and made all sideline offensive adjustments, showcasing his ability to make critical decisions under pressure.

His coaching ability was reflected in the success of his players. Over five years, he coached eight All-Conference players, a testament to his ability to nurture and develop talent.

As a Recruiting Coordinator, Schmidt demonstrated exceptional talent in identification and recruitment skills. He recruited the ECAC and PA State Conference Rookies of the Year two consecutive years. His recruitment efforts spanned high schools in a six-state area, and prep schools and junior colleges nationally. He also incorporated new staff recruiting guidelines and policies, further enhancing the program’s recruitment efforts.

Coach Schmidt began his high school coaching journey at Neshaminy High School, where he served as Head Football Coach from 1995 to 2014. During his tenure, he led the team to seven District One Championship appearances, winning three. His crowning achievement came in 2001 when he guided the school to its first-ever Pennsylvania AAAA State Championship, finishing the season with a perfect 15-0 record and a #7 USA Today national ranking.

In March 2015, Schmidt joined Imhotep Institute Charter High School as Assistant Head Coach. Under his leadership, the team posted its first undefeated season in 2016, going 15-0 and finishing the season with a #10 national ranking. Imhotep became the first Philadelphia public school to win the PIAA Class AAA State Championship.

Schmidt would further his career with stops at Hatboro-Horsham, Upper Dublin, back to Imhotep and is currently with La Salle College High School. He has coached in 6 different state championships and took home the gold three times.

Schmidt’s contributions to the sport have been recognized by numerous organizations. He has been named Coach of the Year by the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association (AAAA), NFL/Philadelphia Eagles, American Football Monthly (Eastern region), Riddell, Schutt Air, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is also the only five-time Coach of the Year honoree by the Bucks County Courier Times.

Mark Schmidt’s career is a testament to his dedication, strategic brilliance, and unwavering commitment to his teams. His impact on the game and the lives of his players is immeasurable. We are proud to induct him into the Lock Haven University Gridiron Greats!
